Today's Focus | Balancing "Realism" and "Cuteness"
For this coloring session, we'll keep the following points in mind as we go.
- Add more colors to bring variation to the skin
- Use fine, detailed coloring to create texture
- Use pink to add a healthy glow and cuteness
By layering more color on top of last time's "shadow base," we'll bring out a greater sense of dimension and expression.
Coloring the Skin | Extending the Shadow for Natural Dimension
First, let's layer a slightly wider shadow on top of the shadow we added last time.
Coloring Tips
- Color carefully with small motions
- For wide areas, lay the pencil down and color quickly
- Don't press too hard — darken gradually
Also, adding shadow in the following areas will bring out more dimension:
- The bridge of the nose
- Around the mouth
- The outline of the face
Adding "Healthy Glow" and "Cuteness" with Pink
To keep the skin from looking too brown, we'll bring in some pink tones.
Using Different Pinks
- Pale pink: used to blend naturally into the skin
- Stronger pinks like Cosmos: used as accents, like blush
Adding pink instantly brightens up the whole face, giving it a lively, vibrant impression.
Expressing Light | "Leaving White" Boosts Dimension
To achieve a realistic finish, expressing light well is essential.
Key Points
- Deliberately leave some areas uncolored, "keeping the white"
- Make the contrast between light and dark clear
This contrast leads to a natural expression of light hitting the face.
Coloring the Mouth and Eyebrows | Keep Dimension in Mind
Next, let's color the mouth and eyebrows.
Coloring the Mouth
- Use a strongly red color (like Strawberry)
- Blend it with pink for a natural gradient
- Darken the center and shadowed areas slightly
Coloring the Eyebrows
- Feel free to reuse the color from the hair
- Letting the strokes extend slightly beyond the lines gives a natural finish
Coloring the Eyes | Shaping the Impression with Color and Light
This time, we'll finish the eyes in blue.
Steps
- Color the top with cobalt blue
- Create a gradient toward a lighter color at the bottom
- Add shadow to the upper area with black
- Emphasize the highlight with white
Using an eraser to lift out some light will also create an even more sparkling look in the eyes.
Finishing Touches | Step Back and Fine-Tune
Once the whole face is colored, step back and look at it as a whole to make adjustments.
- Balance out the colors
- Fine-tune the depth of color
- Add more shadow or light as needed
Doing this will result in a more polished, finished piece.
