[Colored Pencil Basics 2] Learn Beautiful Solid Coloring and Layering! [Colored Pencils]

Published 2025/08/05

Today we'll practice how to create "beautiful solid coloring" with colored pencils. Let's firmly master the basics of solid coloring and layering.

The line art we'll use today has this pattern. Use it with the star mark facing up.

1. Preparation

First, sharpen your colored pencil well. If the tip stays rounded, you won't be able to color cleanly. Once you're ready, let's get started.

2. Basics of solid coloring

First, let's look at a coloring method that doesn't look clean.
If you leave gaps and vary your pressure and stroke direction randomly, it creates unevenness and won't look beautiful.

The correct way to color is as follows.

  • Color little by little with the same pressure so no gaps form

  • Don't try to finish in one pass — fix any spots you're unhappy with by layering more color

  • Even when you want a deeper color, darken it through layering rather than pressing hard

Let's get used to this coloring method.

3. Steps for coloring the line art

First, we'll use a red colored pencil. Start coloring from the edge of the second frame from the top.

  1. Color around the outline
Instead of coloring it all at once, move little by little to trace around the perimeter.

  2. Fill the inside with even pressure
Fill in slowly with consistent pressure so no gaps are left.

Repeat this process to fill in the pattern. It might seem like a monotonous task, but watching the pattern gradually fill with color little by little is very soothing.

When coloring, try to move only your fingertips. If you press too hard or move your whole wrist, your hand will get tired and you won't be able to color for long. Relax just the right amount and enjoy the process.

4. Coloring different sections and layering

Next, we'll proceed in order with orange, blue, green, yellow, light blue, and yellow-green.

  • Orange: color the vertical lines and any unfilled areas

  • Blue: color between the orange and red areas

  • Green: color the center part of the orange section

  • Yellow: color the red frame and any unfilled pattern areas

  • Light blue + yellow-green: finish with layering to create a gradient

When layering colors, color lightly at first so the color underneath still shows through. Pressing hard right away tends to create unevenness, so control your pressure and alternate layers to reach the shade you like.

5. Finished

Once you've colored everything, you're done. Did it turn out nicely?

Today, we practiced:

  • The basics of solid coloring

  • How pressure changes the depth of color

  • Key points of layering

Even with the same color, the look changes with your coloring method and pressure, so please try it with various colors. Combining colors also opens up new ways to enjoy coloring.

Next time, we'll use this same pattern to practice gradient coloring. Be sure to check it out.
Thank you for watching today. See you next time.
